5: Cabling
RAID and Expansion Enclosure Cabling Tips
Keep the following in mind when cabling the RAID controller enclosure to a drive
expansion enclosure:
Controller A contains drive channel 1.
Controller B contains drive channel 2.
Each controller has one dual-port drive channel for a total of two drive ports per
controller.
If a failure occurred in drive channel 1, channel 2 allows communication with the
drives and vice versa.
Controller A is inverted from controller B, meaning that its drive channel ports are
upside down in relation to controller B.
Figure 5-1 shows the rear of the RAID enclosure. Callout 1 shows the locations of drive
ports 1 and 2 (channel 1) on controller A. Callout 2 shows the locations of drive ports 1
and 2 (channel 2) on RAID controller B.

The ESMs on the drive expansion enclosure contain two sets of In and Out ports (labeled
1A/1B and 2A/2B). Only use ports 1A/1B. Ports 2A/2B are reserved for future use.
One ESM is installed right-side up, and the other ESM is installed upside down. Keep
this in mind when connecting cables to drive expansion enclosures
.
